Don’t look at me funny. It can be done. The key is to add enough purchase to the end of the barrel for any muzzle device to screw up to and stay tight and straight.
In this case, I threaded the end of the barrel long enough to accept two thread protectors. Then, I stacked two in place, lock tightened the first one on, and tapered it down to better contour with the barrel. The second thread protector is just there until the muzzle device is installed. In this case, the client will install a silencer when it comes in. He was very happy with the idea and looks forward to giving it a test run.
Here is the final product. I bet it will look great on his hunting rifle.
